Planning a Wedding in Italy
Planning a wedding in Italy takes a lot of organising, so where do you start? If you’re planning a wedding in Italy and need some additional advice, this article should help. I originally shared these tips alongside Jo from Accent Events Limited, and I’ve refreshed the page to keep it more useful for couples planning an Italian wedding now.
I’ve worked across Italy as a Lake Como Wedding Photographer, a Tuscany Wedding Photographer, and I’ve also shot weddings in Sorrento and Sicily. If you’re dreaming of getting married in Italy, these tips should help you make stronger decisions from the start.
Please scroll to the bottom of the page for a short video on how I approach weddings as a photographer.

Below are some of the most important things to think about when planning a wedding in Italy.
Wedding Planner or DIY Bride?
Couples are definitely more confident now when it comes to planning their own weddings abroad. Forums, Facebook groups, Pinterest, Instagram and Google can all make it feel easier to take the DIY route. That can absolutely work, especially if you have time, patience, and are happy to research everything carefully.
That said, there are still some parts of destination wedding planning that are best left to the professionals, especially anything involving legal requirements, logistics, and supplier coordination from another country.
A wedding can take a huge amount of planning time. If you’re juggling work, home life and everything else, those final months can become intense quite quickly. A good wedding planner isn’t just there to save money. The real value is experience, local knowledge, relationships with venues and suppliers, and helping you avoid the sort of stress that can build when you’re planning from abroad.
Wedding Photography Portfolio
Making wedding photos for my couples is something I’m incredibly passionate about. It’s not just about creating images, it’s about helping people relive the atmosphere, emotion and feel of their day years later. Is an Italy Wedding for You?
If you want everything neatly packaged and priced out from the start, one of the larger wedding abroad companies may suit you. You choose your location, venue and guest numbers, and you’ll often get a clear figure quite quickly.
If you want something more personal and more shaped around you, a bespoke approach usually makes more sense. That could mean a different venue, a more relaxed timeline, better food, stronger local suppliers, or more freedom in how your day feels.
The right route depends on what matters most to you. Some couples want ease and structure. Others want character, flexibility and a wedding that feels less like a package and more like their own thing.
You and Your Destination Wedding
It’s surprising how many couples fall in love with an Italian wedding location before ever visiting it. That can still work, but it really helps to get acquainted with the region, the feel of the place, the journey time, and what the reality is like in different seasons.
What do you want from your dream destination? Is it sea views, a vineyard dinner, a city celebration, a cliffside ceremony, or a long table under the stars? Italy has all of that, but the experience varies hugely depending on where you go.
The more clearly you understand what you actually want your wedding to feel like, the easier it is to choose the right place.
Italy Wedding Photography Pricing
As an experienced Italy Wedding Photographer I’ve covered many parts of the country, and my pricing is kept simple no matter where in Italy you’re getting married. The only times it may differ is depending on the date, travel, and how many days of coverage you need. If you’d like pricing info, get in touch below and I’ll send everything over.
Don’t Forget to Focus on You
If budget is your main focus and your main reason for marrying abroad is to save money, it’s worth taking a step back and making sure expectations are realistic. Weddings in Italy can be incredible, but they are not always cheaper, especially once travel, accommodation, logistics and guest experience are properly considered.
It’s also easy to assume fewer guests will come because it’s abroad. Sometimes that happens. Sometimes it doesn’t. A destination wedding can feel like a holiday and a big experience, which means more people may say yes than you expect.
Your guests are making an effort to be there. Thinking carefully about travel, accommodation and ease will make a huge difference to how enjoyable the whole experience feels for everyone.
Specialist wedding planners can be incredibly helpful here, especially when it comes to airports, transfer times, accommodation options and making sure the day works in a practical way as well as looking good on paper.
Budget and Costs of an Italian Wedding
How much will it cost? It’s always one of the first questions, and understandably so.
Things you’ll want to factor into your financial planning include:
- Currency exchange rates, which can shift a lot over a year
- The fact there are no true standard costs
- Location, quality, guest numbers and season
- Whether you’re choosing a package or a bespoke wedding
- IVA, the Italian equivalent of VAT
- Bank transfer fees for international payments
- Entertainment or late night transport costs
- Extra costs linked to timing, setup or logistics
Rather than comparing your plans to another couple’s wedding, it’s far better to build a realistic estimate around your own choices. Two rustic Italian venues can look similar online and end up costing very different amounts once the details are added up.
Wedding Photography Availability
When couples enquire with me about their wedding I’m always genuinely grateful. The only downside is when couples leave it a little too late and I’m already booked. If you’re considering getting married in Italy and think my work feels right for you, it’s always worth checking in early.
And before booking any photographer, I’d recommend reading the article below.
Transport for a Destination Wedding
One of the best bits of advice for a destination wedding is simple. Make it easy for your guests to enjoy being abroad.
That starts at home. Look at direct flights from the UK and from wherever your guests will be travelling. This can massively influence which region of Italy makes the most sense for your wedding.
If you have elderly guests, young families, or anyone with restricted mobility, simpler logistics matter even more. Once people arrive in Italy, think about onward travel, transfer times, public transport, private cars, and whether a hire car is actually realistic in peak season.
Providing your guests with helpful information goes a long way. Accommodation suggestions, transfer details, restaurant ideas, local activities, and important phone numbers can make the whole experience feel far more relaxed.
Finding the Perfect Italian Wedding Venue
The options in Italy are almost endless. Private villas, sea view hotels, castles, vineyards, boutique spaces, old towns, lakeside properties and more. Your personal style will shape what feels right, but there are a few practical things to think about alongside aesthetics.
For example, if you want a legal ceremony in Italy, there are restrictions on where that can happen. Some venues can host both the legal ceremony and the reception, which can make the whole experience much easier for everyone. If you’re planning a larger wedding, keeping everything in one place can save stress and money.
If your priority is the setting and the overall feel, then a symbolic ceremony can open up far more options. Many couples do the legal part at home and then have the ceremony they really want in Italy without the extra complexity.
Take a look at these best wedding venues in Italy and, if Lake Como is on your radar, these Lake Como wedding venues.
When should you start your venue search?
If you want exclusive use of a venue with accommodation for you and your guests, starting 12 to 18 months ahead is sensible, especially if you want peak season weekends. Some venues also require a minimum stay, which affects availability.
For medium sized weddings, around 12 months can often be enough. Larger weddings and more complex venue requirements usually need longer.
Types of Wedding Ceremony in Italy
Civil Ceremony
This is a legally binding, non religious ceremony usually conducted in a town hall or approved civic space.
Religious Ceremony
Catholic weddings in Italy are held in Catholic churches and come with additional religious and civil requirements. If this is the route you want to take, it’s worth speaking to your local priest early on.
Symbolic Ceremony
This is one of the most popular choices for destination weddings in Italy. It removes the legal complexity and gives you much more freedom with the location and style of the ceremony. A celebrant can create something personal to you, whether that’s on a terrace, in a garden, on a hillside, or somewhere by the sea.
Vow Renewal
A vow renewal is a celebratory ceremony rather than a legal one, and Italy is an amazing place for that kind of experience, whether you’re celebrating one year together or twenty five.
Getting married abroad legally in Italy is not always simple, but with the right support and enough planning it can absolutely be done.
Timings for Your Italy Wedding
When choosing your date, it’s worth checking both national and regional Italian public holidays. These can affect local traffic, availability and pricing.
If you’re considering a wedding outside peak season, that can be brilliant, but some coastal areas become much quieter in the winter months, so it’s worth checking exactly what stays open and what doesn’t.
You can also read the best time of year for an Italy wedding for more on this.
July and August are especially hot in many parts of Italy. If you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, the timing of the day matters. Midday can be intense. Late afternoon and early evening are often much more comfortable and usually better for the feel of the day and the light for photography too.
It’s also worth remembering that some regions, especially places like the Amalfi Coast, can become extremely busy in August. Travel times that look short on paper can become much longer in reality.
Having a chat with me about your wedding photography and how the light will work at your venue is always time well spent. If you want to chat through your plans, get in touch.
Communication and Not Getting Lost in Translation
If you’re planning your wedding yourselves, do not be surprised if communication with venues or suppliers can sometimes be a little patchy, especially if your wedding is still a long way off. Many businesses naturally focus on the current season first.
Language is another thing to think about. Even when everyone speaks good English, phrasing and expectations can differ. Some things that feel normal at a UK wedding may not be standard in Italy, or may need extra explanation and planning.
If you have something very specific in mind, it’s always worth being clear early, especially if you’re marrying in a more rural location where supplier choice may be more limited.
Venue Visits
Once you’ve narrowed down the area that appeals most, visiting in person is hugely valuable if you can make it work. Your own experience of the venue, the surroundings, the travel time and the general atmosphere will tell you much more than a brochure or Instagram feed can.
A venue visit can also help you shape the flow of the day, look at nearby accommodation, and even organise a pre wedding shoot while you’re there.
If you’re heading out for a recce and would like to chat photography at the same time, that’s always something I’m happy to talk through too.
Your Destination Wedding in Italy
Ultimately, a destination wedding in Italy is a chance to do things your way. You do not have to follow a fixed format. You can strip things back or make a whole weekend of it. You can keep it intimate or invite everyone you love. You can choose the legal route, a symbolic ceremony, or something in between.
Most of all, the key is to embrace Italy and choose the version of the experience that genuinely feels right for you.
