February Cotswolds Wedding
Laura + Charles at Cripps Barn
Weddings happen all year round, but some months are definitely quieter than others. January tends to be the quietest from my perspective, with February usually not far behind. I’m hoping this wedding shows exactly why winter celebrations deserve more attention, because this February Cotswolds wedding was full of warmth, emotion, and loads of joy from start to finish.
Summer weddings are obviously popular for good reason, but there is something really special about winter weddings in the Cotswolds. The colder weather brings people closer together, the atmosphere feels more intimate, and the whole day can take on this lovely cosy energy that works so well in photographs.
As a Cotswolds wedding photographer, I was delighted when Laura + Charles asked me to photograph their wedding at the brilliant Cripps Barn just outside Cirencester. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed making them.
Calm Winter Bridal Preparations in the Cotswolds
I get asked sometimes if I get bored going to wedding after wedding, but the truth is every day feels completely different. The people are different, the light is different, the atmosphere is different, and the energy always shifts from one wedding to the next.
Bridal preparations are a good example of that. Sometimes I arrive and there are only a few people there, all hanging out and taking things slowly. Other times it is a packed room with bridesmaids, family, hair, makeup, music, and loads going on all at once.
Laura’s morning sat much more on the calm side of things. She got ready in a lovely cottage not far from Cripps Barn, surrounded by her mum and bridesmaids, and the whole start to the day felt really relaxed. The cottage had low ceilings and small windows, which made some of the rooms feel quite dark, but it also created really nice window light in certain spots. It was a beautiful way to begin this winter wedding in the Cotswolds.
Cotswolds Barn Wedding Ceremony at Cripps Barn
Sometimes barn wedding ceremonies can be tricky because the light is not always ideal, but the ceremony space at Cripps Barn is genuinely gorgeous. It always helps when you have a really lovely couple in front of you too, and Laura + Charles brought so much warmth to the whole space.
One of the obvious downsides of a February wedding is the cold, but there is a nice side to that as well. People stand closer together, hug more, and the whole thing can feel even more intimate. You could really feel that during this ceremony. There was loads of smiling, loads of emotion, and a really relaxed atmosphere from start to finish.
I’m really proud of this Cripps Barn wedding photography because it captures exactly how the day felt. If you’re planning a barn wedding in the Cotswolds, this venue is a brilliant one to look at.
Portraits, Speeches and Dancing at a Winter Cotswolds Wedding
There are so many great wedding venues in the Cotswolds and, as far as I’m concerned, they all have something to offer when it comes to portraits. My approach with couples is always to let them be themselves first. I’ll give a little guidance where needed, but I never want it to feel stiff or over-directed.
It was properly cold on Laura + Charles’s wedding day, but you can see in these photos how happy and comfortable they were together. That is always what matters most to me. Even a quick walk outside in winter can create something really special when a couple is relaxed and fully in the moment.
One of the bigger challenges with a February wedding is losing the light early. For this part of the day I used off camera flash to add a bit more shape and energy to the photographs. It helped during the speeches, cake cut, and first dance, especially in the darker spaces at Cripps Barn. Years ago, limited light might have felt intimidating. Now it is just another part of the day to work with creatively.
